MS-3 System Program (Ver.1.10)


Use MS-3 System Program Ver.1.10 as a set with MS-3 Editor/Librarian Ver.1.0.3.
How to know the version
Before you start, check the system program version of your MS-3.
  1. While holding down [ ENTER ], turn power ON.
    Continue to hold down ENTER until the BOSS logo appears on the display.
  2. After a short while, the version information appears on the display.
    If this shows the latest version (version 1.10 or later), there's no need to update your MS-3.
  3. After verifying the displayed version, switch off the power.

  • When a "CURRENT NUMBER" setting has been made for a controller at "CTL, ASSIGN & MIDI SETTING," operation of the "CURRENT NUMBER" number switch, immediately after a bank change, has no effect.
  • In bank operations using CTL IN, when "BNK.CHG (BANK CHANGE MODE)" is set to "IMMED (IMMEDIATE)," repeat function sometimes stops.

Bug Fixes
The following bugs were fixed.
  • When the PATCH MIDI parameter of PC, BANK MSB, BANK LSB, CC1 NUM, or CC2 NUM is set to its maximum value, the data in Editor/Librarian goes to "0."
  • When BNK.CNG (BANK CHANGE MODE) is set to WAIT, bank switching sometimes fails to occur when number switches ([1] + [2] or [3] + [4]) are pressed or an external pedal is depressed.
  • When a "B0" (bass 5th string open) note is input to B.HARMONIST, the harmony pitch is not correct.

Bug Fixes
The following bugs were fixed.
  • When DELAY TIME is set to notes, the TAP illumination time is incorrect.
  • When "KNOB ASSIGN = BPM" is in effect, the state when PREF for BPM has been switched using SYSTEM<=>PATCH is sometimes erratic.
  • The only value that can be selected for PEDAL BEND - PITCH - MIN/MAX using ASSIGN is "0."
  • After a PATCH CHANGE operation, CTLOUT is sometimes in an unintended state.
  • At the EFFECT CHAIN screen, if a CTL IN jack is disconnected or when the FS-5L is ON (LED illuminated), EFFECT TYPE is sometimes unselectable.
  • The internal state of ASSIGN TARGET = MIDI CC# is not reset by a patch change.
  • When the OUTPUT SELECT value for PREFERENCE is changed, the setting fails to be applied until the power is reset.
Change the specifications
  • The specifications have been changed so that during continuous INC/DEC of PATCH/BANK by external control, REPEAT is stopped when PATCH MIN/MAX is reached.
  • The specifications have been changed so that when BPM TAP or DLY TAP is assigned to the MEMORY/MANUAL switch, the indicator flashes in MEMORY MODE as well.
  • The specifications have been changed so that WAIT can be used when using CTL IN to perform a BANK UP/DOWN operation.

What you will need to update your MS-3
  • MS-3
  • USB cable
  • A computer with a USB connector ( Windows, Mac )

Caution when performing the update
  • If you update on the normal mode of MS-3 against the correct procedrue, this update data may destroy the system program.
  • Never power-off your MS-3 while the update is in progress!
    If a power failure or similar accident occurs during the update process, the MS-3 won’t be able to start up in normal operating mode. This will require servicing, so you will need to contact Roland service center near you if this occurs.
  • We regret that we are unable to answer questions regarding the update procedure using this system program. Please perform the update responsibly, following the directions given in this document.

Getting the update file
Please open/extract the downloaded "ms3_sys_v110.zip" file on your computer to get the update files named "MS3ROM.BIN" and "ROMINFO.TXT" in the "ms3_sys_v110" folder.

Procedure for the update
  1. Connect the computer to the MS-3's USB port by a USB cable.
  2. Hold down the octave key [EXIT] button and turn on the power.
    * Continue to hold down EXIT until "MS-3 Updater" appears on the display.
  3. Open the "BOSS_MS-3" drive folder in your personal computer.
    With Windows
    Within My Computer (or Computer), open "BOSS_MS-3" (or Removable Disk).
    With macOS / OS X
    On the desktop, open the "BOSS_MS-3" icon.
  4. Copy (drag and drop) the "MS3ROM.BIN" and the "ROMINFO.TXT" in the "ms3_sys_v110" folder into the root directory of the "BOSS_MS-3" drive.
  5. After the copy has been completed, unmount or remove the drive on your computer.
    With Windows
    Right-click on the "BOSS_MS-3" icon in My Computer (or the "Removable Disk (*:)" icon) and execute "Eject."
    With macOS / OS X
    Drag the "BOSS_MS-3" icon to the Trush icon in the Dock.
  6. Disconnect the USB cable.
    The message "Push [ENTER] to start." will appear on the display.
  7. Press [ ENTER ] button to start the update process.
  8. The message "Completed." will appear on the display when the update process completes.
  9. Turn the MS-3 power off.
    Please verify the version number "1.10" with the procedure described in "How to tell the version" part of this document.
